Accuracy, precision and uncertainty in GNSS reports

Close agreement between repeated coordinates is useful, but it does not prove agreement with the intended reference.

Accuracy, precision and uncertainty in GNSS reports

Different terms answer different questions

Precision describes repeatability, while accuracy concerns agreement with the quantity or reference being assessed. An uncertainty statement needs a defined component, confidence convention and method. A receiver estimate or RMS specification should not be relabeled as a guaranteed maximum error for every field point.

Report what was actually tested

Separate horizontal and vertical checks and explain the role of independent control. Include reference information, observation procedures and exclusions. If an uncertainty figure comes from a product specification rather than project validation, identify that distinction so the reader can judge the result on the correct evidence.

Practical checklist

Practical checklist

  1. State the component and statistical meaning of each figure.
  2. Separate specification values from measured project checks.
  3. Document references, validation methods and exceptions.
