Ground control points vs checkpoints for drone mapping
Control helps a model fit; independent checkpoints help evaluate the result.
Separate adjustment from validation
Ground control points are used to constrain or align a photogrammetric project. Checkpoints are withheld from that adjustment and used to evaluate the resulting coordinates. Using the same points for both roles can make the reported performance look better than an independent assessment would support.

Protect the quality of the reference points
Observe clear, stable targets using an appropriate GNSS method, correct antenna heights and documented references. Distribute points for the project geometry and preserve their role labels during processing. A good image model still cannot provide an independent test if its checkpoint coordinates share an unrecognized systematic error.

Practical checklist
- Label control and checkpoint roles before processing.
- Record target identifiers, heights and coordinate references.
- Keep evaluation points independent from the adjustment.
