GNSS under tree canopy: planning around signal obstruction
Trees can block or weaken signals and reduce the continuity needed for precise phase measurements.
Canopy changes the observation environment
Leaves, branches and trunks can obscure parts of the sky and contribute to reflected or weakened signals. Conditions vary with canopy structure and receiver location. A receiver may continue displaying coordinates while its measurement quality changes, so inspect solution state and tracking rather than assuming continuous quality.

Use a method suited to the point
Establish clear-sky control and review whether offsets or another survey instrument are more appropriate beneath dense cover. Repeat observations under independent conditions when the project method permits GNSS there. Document the limitation and avoid converting uncertain canopy measurements into precise-looking results merely by exporting more decimal places.

Practical checklist
- Inspect canopy density and available sky directions.
- Consider an offset from independently checked control.
- Record observation limitations with each affected point.
