Reference frames and coordinate epochs: why dates matter
A precise coordinate may need both a frame realization and an epoch.
The reference is not only a system name
The Earth and its crust move, and precise reference frames can represent coordinates at stated epochs. A broad label such as WGS 84 may not describe the full realization or transformation needed for a demanding survey. The significance depends on the area, time interval and required uncertainty.

Preserve the original coordinate provenance
Record the reference frame, realization, coordinate epoch and source where available. Confirm the transformation workflow with the project geodetic specification. If datasets from different dates do not agree, investigate their references before applying an arbitrary translation that could conceal a systematic difference.

Practical checklist
- Retain frame, realization, epoch and source metadata.
- Check the required transformation procedure.
- Investigate reference differences before adjusting coordinates.
